Wassailing Went With a Swing
Our first Wassail event in the Walled Garden at Chiswick House on 16th January went with a swing!
Organised by the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust along with Abundance London, over 350 people attended to celebrate our 200 newly planted fruit trees.
Looking forward to a good harvest later in the year we tied toast and ribbons to our venerable mulberry tree. Local artist, Malcolm Temple was Master of Ceremonies and we were led in a Wassail song by local resident Ray Batchelor.
Traditional festivities were enhanced by ‘Yes!!! Brazil’ a local samba band who led a merry dance around the garden and trees, followed by children and adults playing musical instruments, banging on tins and generally making as much noise as possible to ward off the bad weather and evil pests and diseases that could attack our crops! Sparklers and glow sticks lit our way and we followed the old tradition of throwing holly and branches into our roaring fire.
'The whole event was great fun,' said Karen Roberts, Community Gardener. 'We were pleased to work with the local fruit charity Abundance London and given the event’s popularity, I think it will become an annual celebration.'
